MTS Spark Wave® Therapy – an innovative & effective long-term solution for patients suffering from urogenital diseases

Urogenital indications such as erection problems and chronic pain in the pelvic region frequently lead to a reduced quality of life for affected patients. Besides the actual symptoms these indications often have a negative impact on sexuality and partnership. With the Spark Wave Therapy system urogold100 a simultaneously gentle and effective treatment option for patients suffering from urogenital diseases is now available.

The new generation of devices in ESWL for a gentle therapy of urolithiasis

Renal stones are one of the most painful affections of the urinary tract. The morbidity rate in Central and Western Europe is about 5 % of the population whereas men, typically aged between of 30 and 50, are affected more frequently than women. The extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) was introduced as a non-invasive therapy solution for renal stones in 1980. Today, it is the most common treatment method for urolithiasis. ESWL is characterised by a great success of the therapeutic outcome as well as low side effects.

MTS Spark Waves® – an innovative & effective long-term solution for patients suffering from urogenital diseases

Urogenital indications such as erection problems or chronic pain in the pelvic region usually lead to a reduced quality of life for the person affected. Besides the actual symptoms these indications often have a negative impact on sexuality and partnership. With the new Spark Wave Therapy system urogold100 a simultaneously gentle and effective treatment option for patients suffering from urogenital diseases is now available.

What is the effect of MTS Spark Wave® Therapy in urogenital indications?

Spark Wave Therapy applied in urogenital indications makes use of endogenous, biological regeneration mechanisms. Spark Waves stimulate the natural healing mechanisms of the tissue at the cellular level and lead to improved blood supply due to the stimulation of growth factors, the migration of stem cells and the generation of new blood vessels.

These factors lead to an improvement of the patient´s erection as well as to pain reduction, muscle relaxation and, potentially, to the healing of patients with chronic pain in the urogenital area.

Which urogenital indications is MTS Spark Wave® Therapy with urogold100® qualified for?

  • Peyronie’s disease (PD) / IPP (Induratio penis plastica)
  • Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
  • Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS) / Chronic Prostatitis (CP)

Please see ed-information.com for more information to find an urogold100 treatment centre.

How is the treatment conducted?

The therapy of ED or CPPS is carried out on an outpatient basis. According to the diagnosis, the treatment area is determined through palpation or ultrasound. Ultrasound gel is applied and the therapy head is moved across the affected area while releasing the Spark Wave pulses. Quantity and intensity of the pulses are dependent on the specific indication. The greatest advantage for the patient is, that the therapy is gentle and requires no anaesthesia. No major side effects have been reported.

lithogold380® – the new generation of devices in ESWL for a gentle urolithiasis therapy

Renal stones are one of the most painful affections of the urinary tract. The affection rate in Central and Western Europe accounts for about 5 % of the population whereas men, usually aged between of 30 and 50, are affected more frequently than women. The morbidity rate in Central and Western Europe is about 5 % of the population whereas men are affected more frequently than women. The extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) was introduced as a non-invasive therapy solution for renal stones in 1980. Today it is the most common treatment method for urolithiasis. ESWL is characterised by a great success of the therapeutic outcome as well as low side effects.

How does Spark Wave® Lithotripsy work & why is it so successful?

The therapy of urolithiasis with the lithogold380 makes particular use of the physical-acoustic effect of Spark Waves. Spark Waves are generated extracorporeal and passed through the skin by means of a water cushion. The concentrated acoustic Spark Wave energy is focused and directed onto the area where the stone is located. Once the sound wave of the Spark Waves hits the renal stone it takes a few thousand pulses until it is pulverized into sand grain-sized particles which can be released through the ureter.

The specially designed large focus of the lithogold380 combined with lower peak energy allows an especially effective and kidney-conserving therapy. The large focus of the system completely encloses the renal calculus and concentrated Spark Wave energy exerts its effect evenly on the entire stone and disintegrates it; referred to as “squeezing effect”. The success rate of stone fragmentation is about > 95 %. The retreatment rate with lithogold380 has been reduced down to < 7 %.

Another advantage of the lithogold380 is the limited maximum pressure of the therapy system which guarantees an especially gentle treatment for the renal tissue reducing anaesthesia to a minimum.

Which urological indications are approved for the Spark Wave® Therapy with lithogold380®?

  • Renal Calculi
  • Ureteral Calculi

How is the treatment conducted?

The treatment of kidney stones is carried out on an outpatient or inpatient basis, usually requiring no general anaesthesia. Generally, it is sufficient to ease the patient through analgesics. During the procedure, the renal stones are first located by means of X-ray or ultrasound. Subsequently, ultrasound gel is applied and the therapy head is put on top releasing the Spark Waves to the affected area. The quantity of applied Spark Waves depends on the type of stone. The recovery time for patients is usually quite short. After only a few days, the patient is able to participate in daily life again.

Treatment duration & number of treatments

Generally, a single ESWL treatment is sufficient to successfully disintegrate the calculus.
